How to Catch a Chipmunk with A Milk Jug

Catch A Chipmunk with A Milk Jug by Doing This

In case you are wondering how to keep chipmunks out of flower pots, gardens, or crops, trap this creature in the first place. Just follow the given steps:

Step 1: Gather All Tools

The first thing you need to prepare is the tools. Without that, you can’t be able to move forward to actually trap the chipmunk through the milk jug. Here is the list of tools that you’ll need in the following steps:

  • Safety Gloves
  • 3 Milk Jugs
  • Lukewarm Water
  • Sunflower Seeds
  • Cayenne Pepper (Optional)

Step 2: Place Food That Chipmunk Dislikes

In this step, use some sort of foods that chipmunk hates in the garden areas. This will help the chipmunks to stop roaming around the garden if you can’t be able to catch it in the first trial.

So, can cayenne pepper deter chipmunks? Yes, it works great as a repellent however I would suggest using food scents like garlic that 100% work. Other than this, you can use hot chili pepper, mint, vinegar, or coffee seeds.

Step 3: Fill the Milk Jug in Water & Add Sunflower Seeds

Grab the milk jug and open the lid using your hand. Then, fill 2/3 of it using lukewarm water (meaning the water should cover 60% – 70%). You have to do the same thing on the other 2 milk jugs too.

After that, you can use sunflower seeds to attract the chipmunks to stay on the bottle. If you don’t have sunflower seeds, then use peanut butter as it works well to bait them.

In that case, try to use spread peanut butter at the mid-point of the milk jugs and then fill the water.

Step 4: Insert the Jug in The Hole

Now, locate the fresh burrow of chipmunks to avoid making mistakes. Just ensure to pick a hole that has a visible surface.

Then, grab the milk jugs with water and place one directly on the hole. Wait for all the water to reach the bottom side and then insert another milk jug.

Wait for a few whiles. The chipmunks will pop up inside the milk jug. If it doesn’t appear, then finish the milk jug and place another one in the same hole. Let it sit there until the chipmunk comes out.

Step 5: Trap the Chipmunk

Once you see the chipmunk inside the milk jug, quickly flip it upside and put on the lid. This way you can catch it in the easiest way ever.

After You Catch a Chipmunk

After you have successfully trapped the chipmunk through a milk jug or other methods, it’s time to eliminate it from your garden.

If the creature is making serious damage in your garden, then it is permissible to kill it but only in a HUMAN way.

Since you won’t find any poison to kill the chipmunks, it’s better to try one method out of two based on your choice. These are:

  1. Kill it by shooting (legal)
  2. Released It far away from your garden

Shooting

If you have picked a shooting trick, then use a small-gauge shotgun or a 0.22 caliber rifle with a bird shot. Otherwise, use the C.B. cap loads depending on your reach.

Keep in mind that chipmunks are overly sensitive and well-alert. You have to shoot it fast otherwise it’ll be hard to hit the target. Plus, ensure to shoot it on bright sunny days when the sun rises from the east.

Trap & Release

This trick is pretty easy and has way more human technique than killing the cute creature (even if it gives a pain still).

In the trap state, try not to touch or contact it directly without wearing safety gloves. It’ll simply bite you badly so be careful.

Then, go to a place that is several miles (15 – 30 miles) away from your garden so that it doesn’t come back. Be sure to get the permission of the landowner before you leave the chipmunks in that place.

Note: Do not use mouse or rat poison on chipmunks as it’ll give a lot of pain which counts as toxic bait.

Wrap Up

This is how to catch a chipmunk with a milk jug! The above technique is pretty straightforward and needs a few tools (which won’t cost more since you can find most of them in the home).

It’ll be a bit tricky to immediately close the lid for a beginner. With a little bit of practice behind the scenes, you’ll champ the procedure.
